News week of 22 September
New books continue to fly in the door as this amazingly summer like month of September comes to an end.
The book of the week is John Le Carre's A Legacy of Spies. George Smiley returns after a literary absence of 25 years, in a novel ingeniously interweaving past and present.
A Reckoning by Linda Spalding will move to the top of my “to read” pile. Linda won the Governor General’s Literary Award for her novel The Purchase in 2012. She again turns to the past to weave a story of a family on the edge of ruin, in a country on the verge of civil war.
Dead Reckoning – The Untold Story of the Northwest Passage is Ken McGoogan’s most ambitious book yet, as he delivers a vivid, comprehensive history of Arctic exploration. The Arctic, and especially the fate of the Franklin expedition and the recently discovered ships Erebus and Terror have been Ken McGoogan’s life passion, which he shares with us in this richly illustrated volume.
Well known Canadian mystery author Linwood Barclay turns his attention to teenagers with a new series The Chase, about a dog and a boy who must become a team to survive in the first instalment Get Ready to Run.
Canada 123 follows Paul Covello’s Canada ABC. Bright big board books for little ones.
