NEWS WEEK OF SATURDAY 26 AUGUST 2023

How did it get to be the last week of summer? Though, the sun is rising later and later – and the boat ride into the marina this morning was certainly “fall like”.

Fall is always the busiest time in the publishing industry and the fall releases are beginning to trickle in –

Girl in White by Sue Hubbard is a reprint of her 2012 novel about an Expressionist painter denounced as a degenerate by the Nazis. I loved reading her books Rainsongs and Flatlands and can’t wait to read this one!

A New Season by Terry Fallis is sure to be gobbled up by all his many fans!

A Chateau Under Siege by Martin Walker continues the Bruno, Chief of Police novels. When an actor in a play is attacked during a performance, Bruno must learn whether it was an accident, a crime of passion, or an assassination attempt with implications far beyond the small French village.

Rage the Night by Donna Morrissey will go into my pile of books to take to Newfoundland this fall – if I can wait that long to read it! The intimate tale of one man’s quest to discover the truth of his birth set against a real-life Newfoundland tragedy from 1914, brilliantly and sensitively imagined by one of Canada’s most beloved storytellers.

Our Missing Hearts by Celeste Ng is now in paperback – an old story made new, of the ways supposedly civilized communities can ignore the most searing injustice.

For the kids we have A Horse Named Sky by Rosanne Parry, inspired by the free-roaming horses of the Virginia Range in Nevada – where these animals face global warming, drought, and human encroachment in their fight for survival.
