Authors and Artists at Parry Sound Books

It feels like summer in Parry Sound! The summer residents and the tourists have arrived, along with – finally – the heat. The days are long – and perfect for reading on the dock or on the rocks of Georgian Bay.

All of us who live in Parry Sound know that in the summer, especially, there people out in the woods, along the shoreline, and on the Islands of Georgian Bay who are recognizable and well known in the world of business, sport and the arts – visual, performing and literary. This summer we have invited our local, and some of Canada’s most acclaimed, authors and an artist to visit Parry Sound Books to sign their books.

We begin the summer with Michelle Muzzi on Saturday 5 July. Her first novel Picks & Sticks takes place right here in Parry Sound where Michelle grew up. The story takes place in 1972, as a teenage girl discovers she has a desire to be a hockey player, even if she risks her figure skating career. The strength of the novel lies in its exploration of the relationships between the characters of all ages, and a gutsy teenager’s determination to have it all, her way.

Ed Bartram will be with us on Saturday 12 July. Ed Bartram needs no introduction to many Georgian Bay cottagers. His prints and paintings of the rocks of Georgian Bay are well known, and have been exhibited recently at the McMichael Canadian Art Gallery, and last summer at the Charles W. Stockey Centre. The Rockscapes of Georgian Bay brings together the art and the story of Ed Bartam’s life as a painter, printmaker and photographer.

On Saturday 19 July local ghost hunter and storyteller Terry Boyle will sign his new book Haunted Ontario 3. Terry will convince you that those “bumps in the night” have a story to tell – and he is always as interested in hearing your stories of ghostly encounters as he is in sharing his own experiences.

Eric Walters is the author of many acclaimed and bestselling novels for children and young adults. His novels have won numerous awards, including the Silver Birch, Blue Heron, Red Maple, Snow Willow, Ruth Schwartz, and Tiny Torgi, and have received honours from the Canadian Library Association Book Awards and UNESCO's international award for Literature in Service of Tolerance. A welcome new cottager in the Parry Sound area, Eric Walters will be here on Saturday 26 July to sign his books, most recently TheRule of Thre3 and earlier books including Camp X, Fly Boy, Safe as Houses, Wave, We All Fall Down – and many, many more!

Finally, as we head into August, Susan Swan will be here with her book The Western Light on Saturday 9 August. Susan is a long time Georgian Bay cottager and has woven together a story of the Western Island Light and a hockey hero – what could be more Canadian!

Rain or shine, bring yourselves and your cottage guests into town on some summer Saturdays and meet some world renowned local authors at your local book shop.
