News – August Long Weekend!

9781594206740.jpg

The August Long Weekend already! I always feel that summer has almost disappeared and will be gone before I know it – along with so many of our summer residents and tourists – while my husband always says, aah, still so much summer left. Whichever way you feel, enjoy it, we are indeed so very privileged to be in this beautiful place.

New and Noteworthy this week

The Spy & the TraitorThe greatest Espionage Story of the Cold War by Ben Macintyre, now out in paperback, reveals a tale of betrayal, duplicity, and raw courage that changed the course of the Cold War forever.

Travel Light, Move Fast is the latest from Alexandra Fuller – I love this writer and that she has shared her life, beginning with Don’t Let’s Go to the Dogs Tonight. This time it is a return to Africa upon the death of her father – a watershed moment in her life, with more tragedy to come. Absolutely brilliant book!

Another book I just read and loved was Ask Again, Yes by Mary Beth Keane – passed it to my daughter who read it in 2 days – loved it. Read about it next week in the North Star and on our website. I immediately read her earlier book Fever, a novel of Typhoid Mary and her life in New York City in the early 20th century – fascinating historical fiction and somehow also very contemporary.

Margaret Atwood – Starting Out is a biography by Rosemary Sullivan previously published as Red Shoes – now with a new preface.

Have a great long weekend – be safe on the water and on the roads!

This summer’s feel good – funny but serious – read is The Floating Feldmans by Elyssa Friedland.  Three generations of Felman’s celebrate a birthday on a cruise – confined together, secrets are revealed, sibling rivalries surface along with a new sense of the importance of family.

I live such a sheltered life that I’d never heard of Jimmy Fallon until yesterday - but entirely by coincidence I am half way through reading Ask Again, Yes by Mary Beth Keane and stayed up way too late last night reading. It is a well written and completely absorbing novel!

News - The Middle of July 2019

It is not often that I leave the store for more than a day or two in the summer, but we are off to spend a week in Newfoundland so that we can attend the opening of the summer show at Christina Parker Gallery where Alan has several pieces on display.

We will spend some time in Old Bonaventure where one of our jobs is to restore our outhouse before our grandchildren arrive there at the end of August. I have a big stack of books with me and look forward to undisturbed days of reading in the much more moderate temperature of seaside Newfoundland.

I leave the store in the capable hands of Patti, Lynn, Sara and Janet, and look forward to returning to work with renewed energy for the busiest weeks of the summer.

ROSANNA BATTIGELLI – SATURDAY 20 JULY 2019

La Brig_hi res.jpg

La Brigantessa by Rosanna Micelotta Battigelli (Inanna Publications, 2018) was awarded Gold for Historical Fiction in the 2019 Independent Publisher Book Awards. She received her Gold Medal in May at the Awards Gala at the Copa Cabana in New York City. She attended and read at CanWrite2019 at UBC in Vancouver, where La Brigantessa was shortlisted for the 2019 Canadian Authors Association Fred Kerner Book Award. It is currently shortlisted for the 2019 Northern Lit Award, and it is a 2019 Finalist for The Miramichi Reader’s “The Very Best!” Book Award. It also won an International Book Award for Best Cover in June. Rosanna did a reading at a CAIS (Canadian Association for Italian Studies) Conference in Orvieto, Italy in June.

Rosanna was born in Calabria, Italy, and immigrated to Sudbury with her family when she was three. She has enjoyed coming to Parry Sound for a few years, and Parry Sound Books is one of her favourite stops. She is very happy to be guest author on July 20th, and looks forward to chatting with customers about her award-winning book!

News - Early July 2019

A new month, and the true beginning of summer with water more than warm enough for a long swim.

 And busy in the bookstore!

I am very lucky this summer to have Patti “job sharing” with me and learning this business, and Sara, Lynn and Janet who have worked for me part time for many, many years are here when Patti or I take a day off.
