A rainy Parry Sound Day and at Parry Sound Books we are back to regular business hours of 9 am – 5:30 pm, Monday to Saturday. We are closed on Sundays until the beginning of December.

Though I had some time away the store was busy, with lots of new books arriving every day as always.

Something for Everyone!!

The 2019 Friendship Book -  a perennial favourite!

Half Spent was the Night by Ami McKay is a Yuletide offering that takes place when the witches of New York gather before the fire on the days between Christmas and New Year’s.

A Map of Days is the fourth novel in the Miss Peregrine’s Peculiar Children series by Ransom Riggs. In a brave new world, with unimaginable dangers, the adventure has just begun!

House of Gold by Natasha Solomons is a sweeping family saga set in Vienna and England in the early years of the 20th century.

The Clockmaker’s Daughter by Kate Morton has been flying off the shelves, a story spanning 150 years of family secrets, love affairs, murder, mystery, thievery, and art.

A Spark of Light by Jodi Picoult is another book that has sold well this past week. As always this author tackles a complicated issue in a gripping and nuanced novel.

Unsheltered by Barbara Kingsolver tells the story of two families, in two centuries, navigating the end of the world as they know it.

Erebus by Michael Palin is the story of one ship, two epic voyages, and the greatest naval mystery of all times!

Tombland by C J Sansom is the 7th in the most excellent Shardlake mystery series set in the 1500s – read one and you’ll read them all!

In A House of Lies by Ian Rankin is a new John Rebus thriller – everyone has something to hide, everyone has secrets, and nobody is innocent.

Careless Love by Peter Robinson is the 25th Inspector Banks novel – as always deftly plotted and utterly suspenseful. His previous book Sleeping in the Ground is now out in paperback.

The Reckoning by John Grisham takes readers from the John Crow South to the jungles of the Philippines during World War II, layered with legal suspense.

News week of 19 October 2018

This fall has been a busy one, in the store and in my personal life.

My elderly mother who has lived in British Columbia for over 40 years is no longer able to live alone and is coming to live with me in Parry Sound. After three months of residency in Ontario she will, I hope, be able to move into Belvedere.

In the meantime, after she arrives in Parry Sound on 27 October I will need some help in my home so that she is not alone when I am working and when I am out in the evening. My mother does not need nursing care but she does sometimes need assistance, and she does have some memory loss and is sometimes confused and just needs to be reassured that all is well.

If anyone who reads this knows of any kind and friendly women who would like to be hired “friends” to spend some time with my mother, in the afternoons and a few evenings occasionally please let me know.

REDUCED HOURS FROM 9 OCTOBER 2018

All Things Consoled “a daughter’s memoir” by Elizabeth Hay tells of the years the author spent caring for her aging parents. Beautifully written and told with honesty and compassion.

A Forgotten Place by Charles Todd is the 10th in the Bess Crawford mystery series. As the Great War comes to an end in Europe Bess is drawn into a case that takes her to a remote and bleak coal mining village in Wales.
