News week of 19 October 2018

This fall has been a busy one, in the store and in my personal life.

My elderly mother who has lived in British Columbia for over 40 years is no longer able to live alone and is coming to live with me in Parry Sound. After three months of residency in Ontario she will, I hope, be able to move into Belvedere.

In the meantime, after she arrives in Parry Sound on 27 October I will need some help in my home so that she is not alone when I am working and when I am out in the evening. My mother does not need nursing care but she does sometimes need assistance, and she does have some memory loss and is sometimes confused and just needs to be reassured that all is well.

If anyone who reads this knows of any kind and friendly women who would like to be hired “friends” to spend some time with my mother, in the afternoons and a few evenings occasionally please let me know.

Parry Sound Books will be closed on Sunday 7 October and Monday 8 October.

From Tuesday 9 October – Monday 22 October, inclusive, the store will be open only from 11 am – 4 pm on weekdays, 9 am – 5:30 pm on Saturdays and closed on Sundays.

Please be assured that orders will be arriving every day – and your special orders will come in within a week as usual.

I will be back in the store on Tuesday 23 October and we will be back to regular hours of 9 am – 5:30.

If you find us closed when you expected to find us open I sincerely apologize!

Bellevue Square – the winner of the 2017 Giller Prize – by Michael Redhill is now in paperback.

All Things Consoled “a daughter’s memoir” by Elizabeth Hay tells of the years the author spent caring for her aging parents. Beautifully written and told with honesty and compassion.

Transcription by Kate Atkinson – a new novel from one of my favourite writers – can’t wait to read this one!

A Forgotten Place by Charles Todd is the 10th in the Bess Crawford mystery series. As the Great War comes to an end in Europe Bess is drawn into a case that takes her to a remote and bleak coal mining village in Wales.

The Clockmaker’s Daughter by Kate Morton is an intricately layered story told by multiple voices across time. A story of murder, mystery, thievery, art, love and loss sure to please this popular author’s many fans.

Cast Iron by Peter May is now in paperback. This is the 6th book in the Enzo Macleod series, set in contemporary Paris and decades earlier in other parts of France. Earlier crimes come to the surface as Enzo investigates his last cold case.

Dave Butler has a new novel in his Jenny Willson Mystery series. The first, Full Curl, was the winner of the 2018 Arthur Ellis Award for Best First Crime Novel. Now followed by No Place for Wolverines, Park Warden Jenny Willson initiates a covert inquiry into a proposed ski hill in Yoho National Park, and criminal intrigue that threatens to tear apart a small British Columbia town.

I have to be away for the next 10 days and will be leaving the store in the capable hands of my staff.

However, it is not possible while I am away to have the store open from 9 am – 5:30 pm every day.

So we have compromised, and the store will be open from Wednesday 19 September to Friday 28 September from 11 am – 4 pm on weekdays – Saturdays we will be open 9 am – 5:30 pm as always. We will be closed on Sundays until December.

We appreciate your understanding, and please be assured that orders will be arriving every day – and your special orders within a week as usual.
