News week of 20 April 2017

A grey and cold day – but Mitch has his canoe paddles out across the street so it must be spring!

It has been a quiet week with only a few notable new releases.

The ever popular Wilbur Smith has a new Courtney Family novel War Cry, a thrilling tale of espionage, adventure, and danger, set in Africa from the Great War’s end to the dark days of World War II.

Donna Leon treats us to a taste of Venice with a new novel Earthly Remains, and the previous one, The Waters of Eternal Youth is now out in paperback. After a few less than superior books, I think Donna Leon is back in very good form with these two new Commissario Guido Brunetti mystery novels – and who doesn’t want to spend time in Venice!

Barbara Gowdy against all odds has completed her new book Little Sister – exploring the astonishing powers of empathy, the question of where we end and others begin and the fierce bonds of motherhood and sisterhood.

And just a reminder – there is an event worth attending Friday night – I am sure a good time will be had by all, supporting a great cause!

News Friday 7 April 2017

It has been a week of working on various projects and spending way too much time in front of a computer screen for me. Glad to go home at the end of the day and leave it all behind.

This Saturday we have a very special visitor in the Beatty Building – be sure to bring your children and grandchildren!

New & Noteworthy Books that arrived in the store this week

The Excellent Lombards by Jane Hamilton

Now in paperback this is a wonderful story of a family farm, the brothers and their wives and children who live there. Changes threaten the future of the farm – but in this story we experience it as it was for Mary Frances “Frankie”. I loved it – look in our reviews to read more.

Dennis Lee – Collected poems 1967 – 2017 – Heart Residence

Once he was a young hot shot – now he’s the grand old man of Canadian poetry. Funny how that happens!

The Atomic Weight of Love by Elizabeth J. Church

Now in paperback, I read this novel a year ago and have found there are so many images that have stayed with me. It is the story about a young woman who, in the 1940s, gives up her own career to follow her physicist husband to Los Alamos. Really terrific book.

The Zookeeper’s Wife by Diane Ackerman is “now a major motion picture”.

The book is a wonderful story about the keepers of the Warsaw Zoo who survived the bombardment of the city and continued to attempt to protect the animals in their care – and a stream of Jews seeking safety. A really great book.

HAPPY READING – HAPPY SPRING

News 25 March 2017

A blizzard last night – we are more than ready for this winter to be done.

This is your last week to take advantage of our Pre-Inventory Clearance Sale – so do come in and choose 3 books – and pay for only 2!

A few noteworthy books received this past week are – all in paperback

The Woman in Blue by Elly Griffiths, is the 8th in her mystery series featuring forensic archaeologist Dr. Ruth Galloway and DCI Harry Nelson. This one involves an old friend who fears for her life after receiving threatening letters.

The Tea Girl of Hummingbird Lane by Lisa See is a powerful story about two women separated by circumstance, culture and distance – and the enduring connection between mothers and daughters.

The Murder of Mary Russell by Laurie King – at her best once again, this author delivers a very suspenseful novel featuring Mary Russell and Sherlock Holmes – you won’t know until the very end if the title is true!

The Women in the Castle by Jessica Shattuck is historical fiction, set on Germany during the Second World War. Tells the story of three women whose lives and fates become intertwined as they attempt to resist and survive unimaginable hardship.

And in hardcover – for the kids (and their parents)

The Lotterys Plus One by Emma Donoghue is the story of a very busy family of seven kids, four parents, a parrot, a rat, two cats, a sprawling Victorian house – and grandfather who arrives to change everything.
