News week of 26 April - On the Road
Just as the warm weather arrives in Ontario we are heading away from home, to the far east coast where it is definitely not yet spring. We will arrive at a little house on the ocean where the ground is still well frozen and the plumbers have not yet been able to get the water running. But there is a well and an outhouse – and electric heaters and an electric stove. One of the first jobs we’ll tackle is the installation of a kitchen woodstove and a new chimney – the last owner “modernized” the family home and removed the original chimney – brick by brick!!
We are not travelling in the van pictured above – been there, done that almost 50 years ago. This time we’re taking the aging Volvo wagon stuffed full of art work headed for galleries in Newfoundland – and my grandmother’s blue willow china is being returned to the Maritimes where we can use it every day in our dishwasher free kitchen.
We’ve reached that time of life when we know that each day must be used wisely. Too many friends and acquaintances have died in the past couple of years, and if we wait for “retirement” it will never happen. So we’ll work like crazy when we are home on Georgian Bay – and work like crazy in a different way when we are at home in Newfoundland.
The store is in the capable hands of Janet, Abbey, Sarah and Lynn and I am only a landline phone call away if they need me. If we go over the hill to the next outport we can sometimes get cell phone service to read and send some emails. Perfect!
