Thanksgiving 2010
The summer of 2010 will always be known as the summer of " the girl who" for booksellers and readers - witness a guest at our cottage who started the book one evening and finished the next day

In Parry Sound this Thanksgiving weekend - the weather is spectacular, the colours of the trees stunning. Behind the trees in one of the photographs you will see a sight we are familiar with in Parry Sound - the newly arrived pile of salt that will be used on our roads this winter - a reminder that winter is on it's way regardless of how nice the weather is this weekend!
This is a weekend I always enjoy working, seeing young people home for the first time from college and university, and young couples returning to visit Mom & Dad, some I've known since they were babies, coming into the store with babies of their own.
This is a time to be thankful for all kinds of things - the value of family and friends, our nice warm homes and meals on our tables - it does put those nagging little worries about the future of business in perspective!
Fall is the season of the big book awards, with publishers, booksellers and authors wondering who is going to win the Booker, the GG and the Giller awards.
This is also the time of year when the most new books are published - readers have the lovely dilemma of wondering what to read first! Some will be wonderful surprises, some disappointments - was it really worth spending almost a week reading the new Jonathan Franzen? maybe for some, I'm not so sure.
In Parry Sound we are busy putting together our International Festival of Authors event. On Monday 1 November at 7:30 pm, at the Charles W. Stockey Centre, we will welcome 4 authors who will read from their most recent novels, Katherine Govier, Sandra Birdsell, Andrea Levy and Tom McCarthy. It is an event not to be missed, for more information look at our Authors Events - Upcoming.
Whatever you are doing this weekend, we wish that it is life affirming and that you treasure the good things that each day brings!
We look forward to seeing you when you next visit Parry Sound Books.
