HELP!

I need a flexible part-time year round employee! To start immediately.

You will need to be willing to work, independently, one or two, or three days a week all year round – more in the summer and two or three full weeks at a time in the spring and fall months so I can be away from the store. I am always willing to be flexible about schedule as long the store remains open!

Not only must you be a voracious reader, you must be a person who pays attention to detail, and are literate, friendly, responsible, honest and ready to learn all the many procedures involved in retail bookselling.

I have no desire to retire but I would like to work less. I am looking for someone who is interested in making a commitment to learn this business, and to eventually work more as I work less.

If you are seriously interested please come see me so we can talk, and see if we might suit each other, and if the job suits you.

Being tech savvy in the use of Facebook and twitter and the like would also be useful.

NEW & NOTEWORTY THIS WEEK

Hillbilly Elegy, A Memoir of a Family and Culture in Crisis by J.D. Vance is now in paperback.

Our Homesick Songs by Emma Hooper, is new from the author of Etta and Otto and Russell and James. Set in Newfoundland in 1992 the story unfolds as an outport village is abandoned and the residents re-settled.

Seven Stones to Stand or Fall – a Collection of Outlander Fiction by Diana Gabaldon is now in paperback.

War in Val D’Orca – An Italian War Diary, 1943-44 by Iris Origo has been re-issued with an introduction by Virginia Nicholson. I read this book several years ago and found it a fascinating story of the life of a woman with American and Irish/Anglo heritage who married an Italian in 1924. They established a home south of Montepulciano, a farm and a garden. There they survive the Second World War, a very challenging experience. The farm is now open to the public and well worth a visit – read this book first, and the excellent biography of Iris Origo by Caroline Moorehead. You will see a full review, written in 2010, on our website.

So Much Left Over by Louis de Bernières is now on the top of my “to read” pile. This new novel is described as a “sort of sequel” to the story that begins in The Dust That Falls from Dreams – a novel I loved, and I look forward to being reacquainted with the characters first met there.

A moment of kindness - 9 July 2018

This morning I was witness to a lovely moment that confirms my faith in human kindness. An elderly customer, a man I’ve known for 30 years, came into the store today for the first time this summer. He is a veteran of the Korean War, as is my father, and we have often had chats about that time. He was once a robust man, but last summer it was obvious that he was ill. He was very thin and I wondered if he was still alive, and was sad to think he might not be. And, how would I know.

This morning he came into the store, and we chatted as usual, and I told him a story about my father playing hockey in Korea – an event re-created this past winter during the Olympics. At the same time I was helping another customer select some mystery novels, a younger man who I do not know. Both men came to the sales desk at the same time, and the younger man insisted on paying for the older mans books, as he thanked him for his service in Korea.

A kindness to my elderly customer – and a gift to me as witness, barely managing not to shed tears. A truly remarkable moment. Thank you, whoever you are.

News – Week of 22 June 2018

Returning from several weeks in Newfoundland to full on summer in Parry Sound! And all set for summer at Parry Sound Books – the store is stocked and we are ready for you to shop for your summer reading.

One of the best books I read, of many, during my time away was The Ghost Keeper by Natalie Morrill. This is an astounding first novel from a young Canadian writer. The story is set in Vienna, before, during and after the Second World War. It is beautifully crafted and tells a deeply moving and important story.

Bee by Britta Teckentrup is another very lovely Peek-Through Picture Book by this very talented writer and illustrator.

The Land Of Stories novels by Chris Colfer have become one of our best selling series for young readers – if you have a precocious early reader in the family this series is just right – but also good for young teens. The most recent, the sixth in the series, Worlds Collide, is now in paperback.

We have a great selection of hand made St. Armand Paper in stock. Professional quality drawing and painting paper made on the Lachine canal in Montreal.
