News week of 3 July 2017

A busy, if wet and stormy, long weekend. A book makes it better!

New this week

The Witches of New York by Ami McKay is now out in paperback. This time the author of The Birth House brings us a story set in the 1880s and tells of the lives of a trio of young women navigating the glitz and grotesqueries of the Gilded Age.

We have a new selection of Guest Books featuring Group Seven and other cover art work.

We also have DVDs featuring the Group of Seven from White Pine Pictures –

The West Wind – The Vision of Tom Thomson

Painted Land – In Search of the Group of Seven

Where the Universe Sings – The Spiritual Journey of Lawren Harris

And for the kids –

New stock of Viking Toys& Brio wooden trains – perfect for home or cottage – will last for generations to come.

Me and You and  the Red Canoe by Jean E Pendziwol, with pictures by Phil, is a beautiful new book with a lyrical story describing a perfect summer morning on the water.

News week of 23 June 2017

Welcome this weekend to the Dragon Boat teams – hope the rain stops for you!

New in hardcover this week is Seven Stones to Stand or Fall by Diana Gabaldon, a collection of Outlander fiction including two novellas, all extending the story of Outlander in thrilling new directions.

Several new paperbacks worth noting –

Midnight Blue by Simone Van Der Vlught takes place in 17th century Holland, and tells the story of a young widow who becomes one of very few women working in the Delft pottery shops.

Everyone Brave is Forgiven by Chris Cleave is the story of a group of young friends in London, England who look for ways of contributing to the war effort. Humorous and heartbreaking – intimate losses, daily human triumphs, and a love story through the vast sweep of the Second World War.

The Other Side of the World by Stephanie Bishop tells the story of a young woman, an artist, who struggles with motherhood and marriage. A fresh start in Australia is anything but, as she strives to find her place in the world. Beautifully written, perfectly paced, great read.

A Siege of Bitterns by Steve Burrows is the first in a series of Birder Murder Mysteries – winner of the 2015 Arthur Ellis Award for Best First Novel. And, no wonder! I’m now at the end of the second in the series and moving on to the third. Good mystery novel – with the bird watching element the icing on the cake.
