14 April 2011

The spring weather teases us some days - on others we think of bringing out our winter coats again. The ice is out in the Parry Sound harbour - almost time to get the boat in the water. A few seasonal residents have returned - and a few brave souls have come up to check on their summer cottages. At Parry Sound Books we are compiling summer orders and planning what titles we will  recommend in our summer newsletter. Designs for new bookmarks and tote bags are in the works as we look forward to a busy summer season.

Recent new books include The Land of Painted Caves by Jean M. Auel - finally the 6th book in the Earth's Children series. Henning Mankel has a new - and sadly perhaps the last - novel in the Kurt Wallander Series, The Troubled Man. I am very slowly reading my way through this excellent series of Scandinavian mysteries - I hate the thought of Kurt Wallander leaving my life.

I've just finished reading The Free World by David Bezmozgis. It has had stellar reviews in all the major papers. I loved his first book of linked stories, Natasha & Other Stories, and looked forward to this novel. I found it entertaining - it also gave me a real sense of the corruption and insecurity of life in Russia - but there is something that holds me back from whole heartedly recommending this one. I look forward to talking with other readers who picked this up with the same sense of eager anticipation as I did.

I have entered books today to our on-line sale table - these books are currently on the sale table in the store. I will change the selection each week. I am a little concerned that you will get too much information in your weekly and monthly e-newsletter - so please let me know if this is the case and I will try to reduce the size of the files. We hope that these sale books will tempt you to come into the store.

Don't forget our 2011 Reading Series starts on Wednesday 20 April at 7:30 pm with Thomas Trofimuk reading from his novel Waiting for Columbus - at the Charles W. Stockey Centre. See more under Author events and Reviews.
